Dep Art Gallery è lieta di annunciare la mostra Pittura Colore Spazio dedicata a Imi Knoebel (Dessau, 1940), tra i più noti artisti devoti al minimalismo e al costruttivismo, che dal 7 ottobre 2021 al 15 gennaio 2022 apre la nuova stagione espositiva della galleria.
Curata da Giorgio Verzotti, la rassegna presenta 27 opere realizzate dal pittore tedesco dalla fine degli anni Settanta a oggi – dalla composizione su carta Messerschnitt VI (1977) all’iconica Anima Mundi 106-3 (2019) su alluminio – delineando i diversi momenti della sua ricerca visiva.
Noto a livello internazionale per un approccio minimalista al colore e alla geometria, Imi Knoebel conduce una ricerca strettamente focalizzata sulle qualità espressive della forma, della materia, della superficie e dello spazio. Giorgio Verzotti, già curatore insieme a Marco Meneguzzo della mostra Imi Knoebel. L'idea di Europa tenutasi al PAC Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea di Milano nel 1991, scrive nel testo critico: "Fin dall’inizio Imi Knoebel si è posto il problema della relazione fra l’opera e lo spazio, e noi italiani pensiamo subito alla lezione di Lucio Fontana, che in Germania si è propagata anche grazie ai rapporti fra il maestro italiano e il gruppo ZERO. Fra i riferimenti dichiarati da Knoebel infatti Fontana c’è, insieme a Yves Klein e Piero Manzoni, dunque il campo dell’astrazione più radicale, scelto e frequentato fin dai tempi dell’Accademia a Düsseldorf, insieme all’artista sodale Imi Giese, scomparso nel 1974. Lavoravano insieme, grati al loro professore Joseph Beuys per il suo incoraggiamento, anche se il maestro tedesco diceva che la sua propria ricerca aveva ben poco a che fare con la loro. Lavoravano da autodidatti, arrivati all’arte senza sapere bene cosa fare, racconta oggi Knoebel, ma sapendo bene in quale genealogia collocarsi".
Il percorso espositivo si apre con l’opera monumentale LUEB go 1276w (2013), forma in alluminio i cui confini sono attraversati da listelli gialli, azzurri e neri. A rappresentare gli anni Novanta un’opera della serie DIN II (1994), composta da quattro elementi rettangolari che si susseguono nell’alternanza dei colori primari, e la famosa Kinderstern (1994), la stella dei bambini. Alcuni esemplari delle celebri edizioni intitolate Face (2016) – in cui bande di puro colore sono stratificate in un avvicendamento emotivo e strutturale - e i piccoli An Meine Grüne Seite (2007) e Tafel (2016), che, come altarini cromatici, scandiscono in maniera netta e lineare la poetica percettiva del maestro tedesco. Caratteristiche dell’artista anche le opere formate da composizioni di molti elementi come Tag und Nacht III E1-E5 (1998) e Nummer 9B-15B (2012), dove si assiste alla vera manifestazione del colore come elemento individuale, simile a una scheggia che emerge dalle severe connotazioni strutturali. In rappresentanza dell’ultimo decennio sono esposte tre opere della serie Anima Mundi, tanto cara all’artista: colore e minimalismo, essenza della forma e potenza del segno, costituiscono i cardini interpretativi della pratica artistica di Imi Knoebel.
Accompagna la mostra un catalogo bilingue (italiano e inglese), con un testo critico di Giorgio Verzotti.

Dep Art Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition titled Painting Color Space dedicated to Imi Knoebel (Dessau, 1940), one of the most renowned artists devoted to minimalism and constructivism, which will open the gallery's new exhibition season on October 7, 2021 and will be continue until January 15, 2022.
This exhibition, curated by Giorgio Verzotti, presents 27 works by the German painter variating from the late 1970s to the present, such as the composition on paper Messerschnitt VI (1977) or the iconic Anima Mundi 106-3 (2019) on aluminum, outlining the different moments of his visual research.
Internationally renowned for his minimalist approach to color and geometry, Imi Knoebel conducts research strictly focused on the expressive qualities of form, material, surface, and space. Giorgio Verzotti, who previously curated with Marco Meneguzzo the exhibition titled “Imi Knoebel. L’idea di Europa”, held at the PAC Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea in Milan in 1991, wrote in the critical text: "From the beginning, Imi Knoebel has posed the problem of the relationship between the work and space, and we Italians immediately think of Lucio Fontana's lesson, which in Germany was propagated also thanks to the relationship between the Italian master and the ZERO group. In fact, among Knoebel's declared references are Fontana, together with Yves Klein and Piero Manzoni, and therefore the field of the most radical abstraction, chosen and frequented since his days at the Academy in Düsseldorf, together with his fellow artist Imi Giese, who died in 1974. They worked together, grateful to their professor Joseph Beuys for his encouragement, even though the German master said that his own research had little to do with theirs. They worked as self-taught, coming to art without really knowing what to do, says Knoebel today, but knowing well in which genealogy to place themselves".
The exhibition opens with the monumental work LUEB go 1276w (2013), an aluminum form whose borders are crisscrossed by yellow, blue and black strips. Representing the 1990s is a work from the DIN II series (1994), composed of four rectangular elements that follow each other in alternating primary colors, and the famous Kinderstern (1994), the children's star. Some examples of the renowned editions entitled Face (2016), in which bands of pure color are layered in an emotional and structural alternation, and the small An Meine Grüne Seite (2007) and Tafel (2016), which mark in a clearly linear way the perceptual poetics of the German master as if they were chromatic altarpieces. Also characteristic of the artist are the works formed by compositions of many elements such as Tag und Nacht III E1-E5 (1998) and Nummer 9B-15B (2012), where we witness the true manifestation of color as an individual element, similar to a splinter that emerges from the strict structural connotations, just to name a few. Representing the last decade are three works from the Anima Mundi series, very dear to the artist: color and minimalism, essence of form and power of the sign, constitute the interpretative cornerstones of Imi Knoebel's artistic practice.
A bilingual (Italian and English) catalogue with a critical text by Giorgio Verzotti accompanies the exhibition.
