Dopo aver frequentato il liceo classico nella sua città, nel 1980 si trasferì a Stoccarda per iscriversi alla Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Accademia Statale di Belle Arti). L’anno successivo decidette, inoltre, di frequentare i corsi di Storia dell’arte presso la Universität Stuttgart, l’università cittadina, dove si laureò nel 1985. Finita l’accademia nel 1986, ebbe l’opportunità di organizzare la sua prima mostra personale già nel 1987, proprio a Stoccarda. Se durante gli studi la sua ricerca si focalizzò su un concetto ampliato di pittura (lui stesso scrisse: “Ogni quadro è anche un oggetto”), questo divenne evidente dalle opere degli anni ottanta, dove l’artista si discostò dall’esperienza più classica-accademica, e materiali alternativi alla tela vennero eletti a superficie di indagine. Alla fine degli anni Ottanta alcune opere presero il titolo di Relief, titolo che descrive perfettamente la tendenza alla tridimensionalità della nuova produzione. Tra il 1990 e il 1992 vinse tre borse di studio, tra cui un D.A.A.D. (Servizio tedesco per lo scambio accademico) a New York, con le quali potè permettersi di applicarsi a progetti più ampi e iniziò così a lavorare a opere di grandi dimensioni.
Si potrebbero datare al 1990 i primi Faltungen (piegature), i quali furono realizzati in alluminio o acciaio dipinto, che si sollevano dalla parete conquistando fisicamente lo spazio. Oltre a questo ciclo, durante tutti gli anni Novanta Ullrich concluse alcune serie di sculture come ad esempio, nel 1992, le Islands, opere in acciaio che potrebbero essere descritte come sezioni di solidi su piano inclinato. I colori usati sono quasi esclusivamente i primari, la lezione di Mondrian fu ancora molto viva e influenzò l’artista al pari di quella dei minimalisti americani, come Frank Stella, oltre ovviamente all’Arte concreta. Wolfram Ullrich tiene sempre a specificare di aver studiato “pittura” e non “scultura”, così, dopo l’esperienza delle Islands, o di altri cicli come le Window o le Zone, le opere tornano a occupare lo spazio del muro, avendo però acquisito definitivamente corpo e spessore. Il materiale eletto è l’acciaio; le opere, come spiega lo stesso artista, vengono letteralmente costruite assemblando le diverse parti, in un processo opposto alla scultura, dove si lavora per sottrazione, e per questo motivo materiali come il legno non sarebbero concepibili.
Dal 2000 in poi iniziò a lavorare su forme singole, poliedri chiusi dove il colore occupa solo la faccia superiore mentre il lato, lo spessore, lascia esposto il grigio acciaio. Successivamente il numero di questi “segmenti” aumentò, le prospettive diventarono più ardite e nel 2014 nacque la serie degli Orbit. I colori sono vibranti e la stesura per velature dona una texture morbida e perfetta. Le opere spiccano sulla parete ingannando l’occhio e i sensi dello spettatore. L’artista ancora oggi non smette di sperimentare, approfondendo continuamente la sua ricerca: dalla costruzione alla percezione.

After attending liberal arts high school in his city, in 1980 Ullrich moved to Stuttgart and enrolled at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste (State Fine Arts Academy). In the following year, he decided to also attend Art History classes at the Universität Stuttgart, the city’s public university, where he graduated in 1985. Upon completing the academy in 1986, he was given the opportunity to organize his first solo exhibition as early as 1987 right in Stuttgart. If during his studies his research focused on an amplified notion of painting (he himself wrote, “every painting is also an object”), this became evident from his works starting in the 1980s, where he stood out from the more classic-academic experience since materials alternative to canvas were chosen as surfaces to explore. In the late 1980s, some works were titled Relief, perfectly describing his inclination for three-dimensionality in his new production. Between 1990 and 1992, he won three scholarships including a D.A.A.D. (German Academic Exchange Service) in New York, with which he could work on vaster projects and on large-sale pieces.
His Faltungen (folds) could be dated to 1990, and were made in painted aluminum or steel, which rose up from the wall, and physically conquered the space. In addition to this cycle, throughout the 1990s he created some series of sculptures like, for example, in 1992, the Islands, works in steel which could be described as solid sections on a folded plane. The colors used are almost exclusively primary—Mondrian’s example is still quite alive and influential upon the artist, just as the American minimalists, such as Frank Stella, in addition to, obviously, Concrete Art. Wolfram Ullrich always specifies he studied “painting” and not “sculpture,” and, after his experience with the Islands, or other cycles like Window and Zone, his works once again occupy the space of the wall, though they definitively acquire body and weight. The material of choice is steel; the works, as the artist himself explains, are literally built by assembling different parts, a process unlike sculpture, where subtraction is key, and so materials like wood are not even conceivable.
From the year 2000, he started working on single forms, closed polyhedrons where color occupies only the top part, whereas the side, the thickness, leaves the gray steel exposed. Successively, the number of these “segments” increased, the perspectives became bolder, and in 2014 the Orbit series was born.
The colors are vibrant, and the layering gives the works a soft, perfect texture. They stand out against the walls, fooling the eye and senses of viewers. Even today, the artist keeps experimenting, constantly taking his investigations one step further: from construction to perception.
