Georges Mathieu was a French painter and theorist credited with launching Lyrical Abstraction, which emerged in the mid-1940s with the Nouvelle École de Paris and is also known as Tachism or informal painting.

After studying philosophy and literature, he turned to painting and published several theoretical writings in which he took a stance for the creation of abstract art, which replaces the formalism of a geometric-constructive abstraction by spontaneous improvisations and directly artistically formulated feelings.

Staying true to his writings, Mathieu created his paintings in an immediate, emotionally controlled and intuitive process, which often takes place in front of an audience: in 1956, for example, he celebrated an artistic action at the Théâtre Sarah-Bernhardt, in which he created a four by twelve meter painting in front of about 2000 people within half an hour. The speed of the painting process was intended to incorporate ecstatic state of mind as a stylistic device.

His works have been shown at the Documenta in Kassel and were presented at exhibitions in New York and Paris. They are part of collection of prestigious institutions such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
