Brian Wills
Lexington, 1970. Vive e lavora a Los Angeles.
Brian Wills
Lexington, 1970. Lives and works in Los Angeles.
His practice operates at the intersection of painting and sculpture and is defined by a meticulous, labor-intensive process that combines construction, tension, and layering. Wills creates wooden support structures over which he stretches cotton or nylon threads in precise geometric configurations; these are then built up with multiple layers of paint and resin, resulting in smooth, luminous surfaces that oscillate between two-dimensional image and three-dimensional object.
His work investigates visual perception, chromatic vibration, and the interaction between light and surface, engaging in a dialogue with the legacies of Minimalism and the California Light and Space movement, while maintaining a distinctly process-based and handcrafted approach. Often monochromatic or composed of subtle tonal variations, his works generate shifting optical effects that change according to the viewer’s position and ambient light conditions, activating a direct relationship between the artwork, the surrounding space, and the viewer’s body.
Wills studied at Denison University and later earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School before fully dedicating himself to his artistic practice. Over the course of his career, he has exhibited widely in the United States and internationally, with solo and group exhibitions at galleries including TOTAH (New York), Praz-Delavallade (Los Angeles and Paris), OCHI, and Quint Gallery, among others. His work has also been presented in institutional contexts such as the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and the Torrance Art Museum.
His works are held in significant public and private collections, including the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation and the Colección Jumex, affirming his position within contemporary abstract practices concerned with light, color, and perception.
