Alex Katz
Brooklyn (New York) 1927. Vive e lavora a New York.

Alex Katz
Brooklyn (New York) 1927. Lives and works in New York.
Alex Katz was born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 24, 1927, and spent his childhood in St. Albans, Queens. In 1946 he enrolled at the Cooper Union Art School in Manhattan, where he studied painting under Morris Kantor. After graduating in 1949, he received a scholarship to attend the summer program at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, a formative experience during which he devoted himself to plein air painting.
His earliest works, produced in the mid-1950s, consisted of small landscape collages; by the end of the decade, however, the artist increasingly turned toward realism and portraiture. During these years he began portraying friends, fellow artists, and above all his wife Ada, who would become the recurring protagonist of his work and appear in more than a thousand paintings. Deeply connected to the New York cultural scene, Katz associated with artists, poets, and intellectuals of the New York School, including Frank O’Hara, John Ashbery, and Fairfield Porter, many of whom became subjects of his paintings.
Considered one of the precursors of American Pop Art, Alex Katz developed an immediately recognizable pictorial language characterized by flat colors, close-up compositions, and large-scale formats inspired by cinema, photography, and advertising. Although he worked during the dominance of Abstract Expressionism, he remained consistently committed to figurative painting.
In the 1960s he produced large canvases devoted primarily to group portraits, while in the following decade he increasingly portrayed painters, poets, critics, and figures from the American cultural scene. Beginning in these years, he also created his celebrated cut-outs, painted and cut wooden or aluminum silhouettes that extend painting into real space. At the same time, he collaborated with choreographer Paul Taylor, designing costumes and stage sets, an activity he continued in subsequent years.
Between the late 1980s and the 1990s, the artist returned intensively to landscape painting while maintaining a realistic yet essential approach. His works depict urban views and familiar panoramas of New York, as well as natural scenes immersed in vibrant light, often inspired by the landscapes of Maine, a place with which Katz maintained a strong personal and artistic connection. The first nocturnal paintings date from 1986, when he began experimenting with new effects of luminosity, such as light filtering through branches and foliage. This interest in nature and visual synthesis further developed in the early 2000s through large floral compositions characterized by close-up images of single flowers or small bouquets.
Throughout his long career, Alex Katz has been the subject of more than two hundred solo exhibitions and over five hundred group exhibitions. His first solo exhibition was held in 1954 at the Roko Gallery in New York; in 1971 the Utah Museum of Fine Arts organized his first retrospective, while in 1986 the Whitney Museum of American Art presented a major traveling exhibition that contributed to his international recognition. In later years, important retrospectives were hosted by institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Serpentine Gallery, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. His works are now included in the collections of major international museums, including the Tate, the Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid.
Katz has also received numerous awards and honors: in 2000 he was named “Artist of the City” by Cooper Union, and in 2007 he received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Academy Museum in New York, as well as an honorary doctorate in Fine Arts from Colgate University in Hamilton.
